15 minute read.
We’ve all been there, you’re having a few drinks, you’re feeling sexy, fun and delicious and having a blast! Life is great. Right now. But then in the morning, not so great. You wake up to a headache, throbbing head, a (not so cute), dry dehydrated and puffy face, foggy brain, and short temper. Rude!
But here’s the good news, it is possible to enjoy alcohol and still wake up feeling bright eyed and bushy tailed, sans hangover. Trust us, we’ve done it!
Keep reading for our top wellness tips and tricks for preventing and curing hangovers, the au natural way.
THE HONOR GUIDE TO PREVENTING A HANGOVER:
Make a Salt Sole:
Here’s our trick: prepare a salt sole by adding pink Himalayan sea salt to a glass jar until it’s about a quarter of the way full, then filling the rest of the jar with water and letting it sit for 12–24 hours.
You can place a lid over the glass and stir the mixture to help it dissolve but try to avoid using metal utensils, if possible.
Sodium plays an essential role in maintaining fluid balance in your body. Consuming a mild salt solution like Sole helps the body stay hydrated by balancing your body’s positively and negatively charged ions, such as sodium and other minerals, which lets necessary elements and signals in and out of cells. In fact, inadequate sodium intake can lead to dehydration and water loss, especially if combined with heavy exercise and sweating (aka dancing and brunch cocktails).
If you want to be a super hangover free professional, try mixing a teaspoon of the sole with a glass of water and drinking that. But be careful not to overdo it on the sole, because salt is also a natural laxative. Drink one glass of water mixed with a teaspoon of the sole solution after every alcoholic drink.
At the very least, try a teaspoon of the sole solution in a glass of water before bedtime and then first thing in the morning. Ahhh, prevention never tasted so brackish!
Snack on Bananas & Watermelon:
As much as your sweet tooth may have you convinced that ooey gooey chocolate chip cookies and brownies are the way to go, try to resist and opt for bananas instead. I know, I know, but hear us out!
Alcohol blocks the production of a hormone that helps your body hold on to much needed water. That leads to dehydration and the loss of electrolytes like potassium and sodium. Bananas to the rescue! Bananas are especially rich in potassium and can help replenish your body’s stores. One medium banana contains 12% of the daily value (DV) for this nutrient.
You can even try making a healthy banana split by combining a full banana with a tablespoon of peanut or almond butter, blueberries and a drizzle of honey. Trust me, it’s delish.
Because of its high fructose content, honey may also assist in improving hangover symptoms. One study of 50 adults found that honey increased the rate of alcohol elimination by up to 32.4%. Hangover Prevention Helper?
Not a fan of bananas? Totally get it — we sometimes find the sound of bananas being chewed triggering too... Then try opting for a crisp, juicy watermelon. Since the headache associated with a hangover is usually due to dehydration and decreased blood flow to the brain, eating watermelon might help. Watermelon is rich in L-citrulline, a nutrient that may increase blood flow. What’s more, its high water content alone can help you rehydrate.
Make Friends with Ferments:
Fermented foods are really effective in preventing, and curing a hangover because they provide the high acidity that seems to be beneficial for restoring the pH balance destroyed by alcohol.
One of our favorite ways to incorporate these gut friendly ferments into our late night (or post brunch) routine is by going for miso. Make a miso soup or mix a little miso — we recommend chickpea-based miso — with water and eat it on a salad, mixed with quinoa, spread over a potato or even over toast!
Miso is naturally high in sodium, which will help your body retain the water you lost the night before, and rehydrate you.
Side Note: For those going for the miso with quinoa option; quinoa makes a great choice after a night of heavy imbibing because it’s rich in hangover-fighting nutrients like protein and magnesium. Magnesium helps fight fatigue and loss of appetite, and also helps keep your heart healthy and nerve and muscle cells in good shape. AKA: it’s a good option. :)
But back to the ferments! You can also keep it simple and just munch on a pickle. Snookie style. Pickles are high in sodium, an electrolyte that’s depleted during excessive drinking and eating pickles or drinking their brine may help boost your sodium levels and overcome your hangover.
Down the Hatch:
So, not everyone’s gonna love this one, but we can attest to the following — by incorporating a little lemon juice and apple cider vinegar (ACV) into your hangover prevention routine…
But hear us out! Citrus fruits like lemons are high in vitamin C, and in addition to its role in your immune system, vitamin C is also an important antioxidant. ACV is alkaline-forming, which reduces the levels of acid in your stomach that come from drinking. The vinegar has a natural diuretic effect that can help combat morning-after fluid retention, and can help to stabilize blood sugar levels, which can be a little shaky after a night of drinking.
So, if you can handle it, we recommend squeezing a little lemon into a tall glass of water and mixing it with some ACV. Yum? Or be a badass and take it down in one double shot. ACV is a wonderful liver flusher, and by helping your liver detoxify, you speed up the recovery process and get back to feeling normal quicker. Trust me, it won’t taste nearly as bad as it smells, Muahahaha!
HONOR Yourself:
You know we had to throw this one in! Feeling a little hungry and trying to avoid that next day hangover? Why not mix up a little late night HONOR Mornings with blueberries, avocado, and coconut water!
Some of the award winning ingredients in each packet of HONOR Mornings contains, spirulina, the most nutrient dense superfood on earth, and a powerful blend of 19 green superfoods containing probiotics and enzymes to help your inner ecosystem thrive. This includes spinach which is rich in folate, a nutrient that may be diminished from drinking.
Since hydration is such an important part of hangover recovery, we suggest mixing your HONOR Mornings with coconut water to facilitate reducing hangover symptoms. Coconut water contains tons of electrolytes too —one cup (240 ml) of (sugar free) coconut water has 11% of your recommended daily values for sodium and 17% of the potassium you need!
Then, try using organic frozen blueberries instead of ice. Blueberries are rich in nutrients that fight inflammation in your body, which comes in handy if you have, or want to avoid a hangover.
Finally, incorporate avocado to raise low potassium levels from alcohol consumption and dehydration. One avocado (136 grams) packs 20% of the daily value for this mineral. What’s more, research shows that avocados contain compounds that protect against liver injury. Since drinking in excess takes a toll on your liver, avocados may be especially beneficial for hangovers.
